Multilingual Web Development & Design for the international student market
London, UK (13/07/2010)
Lab Lateral has recently updated www.studyacrossthepond.com, a multilingual website for the international student market, in cooperation with one of our creative partners, Rubber Cheese. This web development and web design project had to deliver a modern looking, user friendly, easy to navigate website that was instantly translated into four different languages with a centralised administration system.
Study Across the Pond (SATP), a long-term client of Lab Lateral, helps overseas students apply for university places in the UK. Since their launch in 2004, hundreds of students have used SATP’s free application support service and have been successfully placed in universities across the UK. They are funded by leading UK Universities who they represent in Norway, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Columbia and the United States.
Bespoke Web Design required by Study Across the Pond
SATP asked Lab Lateral to redevelop the layout and functionality of their existing site (also developed and supported by Lab Lateral) and to make it more user friendly. Their business had evolved to cover more countries since 2004 and the new website had to be multilingual with several new sections to reflect this development.
Multilingual Web Development
The site had to be fully translated into English, Norwegian, Spanish, and Portuguese for the different target audiences. SATP provided the translated text and Lab Lateral ensured that visitors could browse the information in their preferred language without having to wait for pages to load. The images and menu structures were programmed to remain the same in all languages, with just the text being seamlessly changed by the system according to language preference. A menu bar was fixed across the top of each page, allowing the user to choose their language at any stage in their browsing experience, no matter what page they landed on. This web development ensured that the business could be confident of a unified look across all language versions whilst minimising the administrative burden.
User Friendly Functionality
The web development focused on improving the functionality of the website to allow easy navigation as well as increasing the probability of students taking advantage of the free services on offer. The latter was paramount to the success of the website as funding depended on the numbers of students placed at UK Universities by SATP. It was important that the web design gave users the opportunity to act upon the information they were given as they moved through the site. The call to action buttons were made prominent on every page, giving users every opportunity to get in touch with SATP. To encourage visitors to interact with the website, Lab Lateral included new features that would appear on every page: links, news, an online application form, a featured university and testimonials.
A Successful Web Development Project
The web development project delivered a website with a fresh new look and easy navigation that was much more appealing to a young audience than the previous design.
